41 Desk
Because the desk needed to work in a number of rather disparate situations, a custom solution was needed. For one thing, it needed lots of area for two monitors (then CRT), a musical keyboard, as well as a computer keyboard and mouse space. (And, as creative people go, junk space.) Secondarilly, it needed to be at a height condusive to work done both standing or sitting. Finally, it needed to break down to little or nothing.
Lane Stanton Vance was able to provide us a sheet of 4x8 ft 9 ply Maple, with pre laquered Applewood veneer, cut down to 3 x 6 ft.
On top of regular plumbers piping, floor flanges were the crucial component to this desk because they mate 2.5 inch pipe to a 4 bolt pattern that is then easily attached to the wood. Custom cut to the appropriate length (33.5 in, for an overall height of 35 in), the legs were threaded on both ends so that at some point in the future, they could also be bolted to the floor.
Impact:
Besides having the plywood cut (in the kitchen of all places), every part is off the shelf and used as is, keeping supply chain costs down and ease of execution up. Each leg has 10 parts (4 bolts, 4 nuts, 1 pipe, 1 flange), combined with the wood for a grand total of 41 parts, at a cost of under 90 dollars. The table breaks down to 5 peices, and can fit up against the wall with a depth of just over 2.5 inches. Ease of breakdown, and compact storage size translate into ability to transport as well as longer life-span.
